NSC handling of flood criticism shows denial syndrome, says DAP

NSC handling of flood criticism shows denial syndrome, says DAP

The National Security Council's (NSC) response to public criticism about how the federal government had handled the flood disaster epitomises Putrajaya’s denial syndrome, said DAP.
Its national publicity secretary Tony Pua said the NSC had also raised more questions than answers when it defended the government against the criticism.
"I cannot help but feel both vindicated and mildly amused with the strident response the NSC issued to rebut criticisms against its poor management and preparation against the country’s current flood disaster.

They even took the trouble to name me four times in the lengthy reply, accusing critics of 'making their remarks from the bench' who 'are full of pomp'," he said in a statement today.
Pua, who is also Petaling Jaya Utara MP, said he could respond to the NSC rant, paragraph by paragraph, but he would only focus on the two key points in the response issued two days ago.
The first was the NSC's inability to take criticism, Pua said, as if it could do no wrong and no one else, even an MP, should comment on it if they were not involved in the government's disaster management operations.
"The NSC cannot be more wrong. While the public are not directly involved in NSC operations, it is certainly our duty to highlight these issues if the NSC does a terrible job.
"We highlight the issues not for the sake of embarrassing the NSC and the government, but to tell those in power that they can  right those mistakes, buck up and mitigate the problems faced by the people," he said.
Pua also said he did not quote rumours in the social media when he criticised authorities over their response to the floods.
"The NSC accused me of making wild allegations by quoting unfounded rumours in the social media, saying that it felt especially sorry that a public figure like Tony Pua would stoop to quoting information from an unreliable source to lambast the government, particularly towards the NSC.
"I reviewed my two prior press statements again and I did not find myself quoting any such rumours.  Instead, I quoted Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, who is also Kelantan Umno chief," he said.
Pua agreed that there would often be unpredictable challenges in managing disasters, but NSC had failed to demonstrate any urgency in its leadership as a “commander” and was "terribly slow in responding to the rapidly escalating crisis."
Secondly, he said the complete lack of preparedness and urgency to deal with the crisis was exposed by NSC’s own statement.
"It appears that NSC was only interested in taking a leaf of the Prime Minister (Datuk Ser Najib Razak) to imply a threat of 'libel' against me."
The NSC in its statement suggested that Pua could face a libel suit for claiming that Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had only met the NSC on December 27, 2014 to deal with the flood situation; and that no prior meetings were held.
It said several meetings had been held prior to the beginning of the monsoon season, with the first meeting chaired by Muhyiddin on January 3 this year.
A second meeting was chaired by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim on October 13 this year, and a third  at the working level on the same day, chaired by the NSC secretary.
Pua noted that the meeting chaired by Muhyiddin on January 3 was nearly one year ago, and suggested that it could have been to discuss the floods in December of the previous year instead of preparing for the coming one.
"The fact that the NSC admitted that there was only an additional two meetings held on October 13 this year since a year ago only proved that the NSC clearly did not put great importance or emphasis on managing the annual flood crisis.
"The severity of this year’s flood only starkly exposed NSC’s lackadaisal preparations and caught the Najib administration with its pants down," he said.
Pua said NSC's own statement proved the need for a detailed public post-mortem once the current crisis is dealt with.
"It is hence important for us to support both the call by my colleagues, (Seremban MP) Anthony Loke and (Gelang Patah MP) Lim Kit Siang, for a emergency parliamentary sitting to debate the crisis and to set up an independent Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate into the cause and management of the worst natural disaster to hit Malaysia in recent years," he said.
In a statement to defend the federal government from critics, the NSC said the floods which led to the displacement of over 200,000 people in the East Coast states were "abnormal" and were causing major obstacles and problems to the relief efforts by the government.
NSC also said it was disturbed by the allegations made over social media and in web portals, including a commentary published by The Malaysian Insider; and described such criticism as being politically motivated.
Malaysia is dealing with one of its worst floods in history. Almost a quarter of a million people have reportedly been displaced in several states, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak. – December 31, 2014.

(TAN) CHEE KOON'S SON - UMNO TAK BOLEH PAKAI!

CHEE KOON'S SON
UMNO TAK BOLEH PAKAI

Our Country needs much prayer. Youdecide and make a difference. BN is entrenched and would not change.A new government must be given a chance to take over Putrajaya. BN is proven rotten beyond salvage. PR is not perfect but must be given a chance to prove themselves.A (small) chip off the old Opposition bloc

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — For 13 years, he stiffly toed the Barisan Nasional (BN) line, but Dr Tan Kee Kong is now bending his knees to bat the ruling coalition — more specifically, its senior party — out of Putrajaya.
“My dream is to kick Umno out of Putra Jaya,” the 63-year-old who quit Gerakan for PKR two years ago told The Malaysian Insider with much vigour in a recent interview.
“Umno tak boleh pakai,” Dr Tan(picture) crowed, counting down the days to the next general election, which he believes will end with the grand old party being voted  out by  an electorate that had grown more informed of an alternative choice in government since Election 2008. The medical doctor, who retired from practice a decade ago, noted an increasing intolerance at the grassroots level for leaders who failed to practise what they preached and at party leaders too timid to press for reforms.
“We tried, believe me sister, we tried. The time for talking is over. Now is the time for action – kick them out,” Dr Tan said, rather savagely. “BN on one hand is promoting 1Malaysia, it is a good concept but on the other hand, they are promoting Perkasa – their group was registered in six months. Where got such thing? How can?” he quizzed.
A tall, spare man, Dr Tan’s diatribe against the government continued, like a burst dam. He slammed Umno for its double-speak and setting a trend for Malay rights groups like Perkasa.
“I can guarantee you PETRONAS contributes 30 per cent to the government, but the Petronas account has never been tabled in Parliament.
“We run it like a kongsi gelap. What justification is there that the highest lawmakers in the country cannot examine the accounts of Petronas?” he raised, rhetorically.
“The only conclusion is your government have plenty to hide and I blame Dr Mahathir for starting this practice. We in PAC have asked for it but it was never shared,” he added, referring to Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.
Pointing to the last by-election in Sibu, Dr Tan said the groundswell was growing against Umno’s high-handedness in dealing with divergent views.
“Allah has never been an issue…until stupid Syed Hamid made it into an issue,” Dr Tan ranted.
A devout Christian, Dr Tan was referring to the lawsuits brought by several churches and Christians against the Federal government and its former Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, for barring non-Muslims from using the word to describe God.
“My Umno friend asked me: ‘Why Christians only now want to use the word?’ But he doesn’t know the facts. He didn’t know we have been using it for so long and it was only Syed Hamid who banned us from using it,” Dr Tan related.

But the PKR man, who is now co-chief on Selangor state’s land management task force admitted the “real
fight” to capture Putrajaya lies not with the urban voters in their steel-glass-concrete towers but the masses who live outside the cities.
"We’re going to Felda," he said but refused to elaborate further. The former deputy minister of land and co-operative development recently provoked a national uproar when he accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of single handedly destroying the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) by siphoning off millions from the nation’s cash cow for the latter’s personal use.
Najib has denied the claim but has not signaled he will take any legal action over the potentially defamatory statement.
Similarly, Dr Tan maintains his allegations are true, adding that he had been entrusted to answer all questions on Felda in the Dewan Rakyat by his then boss, minister Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam.
A latecomer to politics at 50, Dr Tan said he had been “head-hunted” to join Gerakan in 1995 by its then vice-president, Tan Sri Alex Lee. The irony was not lost to those around them — the medical doctor was the son of Gerakan co-founder Tan Sri Dr David Tan Chee Khoon while Lee, a lawyer, was the grandson of MCA’s founding member, Tun H.S. Lee.
”If I were 30, I would think seriously[of leaving], but now in the twilight of my life, no,” said Dr Tan.
Dr Tan explained he hesitated joining politics at a younger age because of his father.  “I saw how he suffered. His health suffered. He literally gave up his life to serve,” the younger Tan said.
Surprisingly, despite Dr Tan’s disillusionment with the BN,  he still took pains to defend Gerakan, even though the party his father founded in 1968 was not the same party the son joined.
“Of all the component parties in Barisan,  Gerakan is the most conscientious,” he said.  The party had by then entered the BN fold.  Even so, the Dr Tan was optimistic he could follow in his father’s footsteps and make a difference.
“My father always told us: help the poor,” he said.
But he soon learnt that joining Gerakan did not mean he would be able to move reforms unless approved by the coalition’s “tai kor” – Umno.  He became disheartened and even had thoughts of quitting the country altogether. ”If I were 30, I would think seriously, but now in the twilight of my life, no,” said Dr Tan.
He claimed the ruling front does not practice consensual agreement, despite the current MCA’s growing boldness (ha ha ha) in speaking out against its sister-party.
“I want to tell Chua Soi Lek: ‘Eh, brother, do you know we’ve been in BN so long, we will never have an equal voice. They are the tai kor.’ “We all had to toe the line, or else…”  Dr Tan said, recounting the silent threat.
He was planning on retiring from politics altogether but an encounter with a taxi driver on a trip to Singapore changed all that.  “In 2000, I flew into Singapore and jumped into this taxi and this man, 63 years old, thisMalay man born in Batu Pahat, Johor who went to Singapore 40 years ago, he told me: ‘Doctor, we Singaporeans will challenge your country and win’.
“That shut me up. That really opened my eyes to how Umno has used the
NEP as a crutch to appeal to the
ordinary Malay.  Just go ask any ordinary Malay out there, they’re fuming,” Dr Tan said, adding that Singapore’s People’s Action Party (PAP) had drummed into its citizen’s heads that the only way forward for the nation was for everyone to: “Get off your backside and work”.

“We are a government-in-waiting.  Give
us a chance.  If you don’t like us, you can vote us out in the next election,” Dr Tan pleaded.
“I have a burning zeal to try and build a better country, with the public’s help and with God’s help,” he said.
Have a God-blessed day.

June 3 proposed for general election, reports BloombergJune 3 proposed for general election, reports Bloomberg

June 3 proposed for general election, reports Bloomberg

March 16, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — The Najib administration may dissolve Parliament in May for a general election that could likely be held on June 3, Bloomberg reported today, citing three unnamed government officials.
According to the international business wire, the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government is discussing dissolving Parliament for a general election in May or June, ahead of its mandate expiring in April next year.

“Prime Minister (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak (picture) is scheduled to speak on March 26 to as many as 4,000 Information Ministry staff who help oversee elections, the government officials said. One date proposed for the contest is June 3, according to three of the officials,” it reported.
There is a one-week school break from June 3 which could have led to speculation of a likely general election as school buildings are usually used as polling stations across the country.
Najib had already sparked speculation of an early vote when he said in December that preparations had begun for the contest to extend the ruling coalition’s 55 years in power.
A survey conducted by independent pollsters Merdeka Center last month showed the Umno president’s approval rating had surged by 10 percentage points to 69 per cent on the back of RM500 cash handouts to all households earning below RM3,000 a month.
“All signs seem to be pointing towards an election at the end of May or early June,” Bloomberg quoted Ong Kian Ming, a political analyst at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, as saying.
“It’s the best timing for Najib. If he does wait longer there may be other scandals that emerge and the goodwill that he’s enjoying from the budget handouts given out earlier this year may be lost,” Ong added.
Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil announced last week she will step down as women, family and community development minister when her senatorship ends next month after being dogged for over four months by allegations she and her family abused a RM250 million federal loan earmarked for a cattle-farming scheme.
It is understood that Najib and Shahrizat will address some 7,000 Wanita Umno members at the party headquarters here next Friday on the reasons behind her resignation from the Cabinet.
BN will hope that the scandal will draw to a close after the Wanita Umno chief’s husband, who is chairman of the National Feedlot Corporation tasked with running the project, was also charged with criminal breach of trust on Monday.
Najib will lead BN into polls for the first time, with observers saying he must improve on the coalition’s last outing and only a return to a two-thirds majority of Parliament can guarantee he remains in power.
The son of former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak succeeded Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in April 2009, just a year after BN suffered its worst electoral outcome ever, ceding 82 federal seats and four state governments.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was acquitted in January of sodomy charges he claims were politically motivated, has pledged to “clamour for reform” in a bid to unseat Najib after the verdict.

DAP world’s most racist party, says Utusan

DAP world’s most racist party, says Utusan
By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
January 29, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — Utusan Malaysia has accused DAP of being the world’s most racist party following Lim Kit Siang’s recent call for Chinese voters to unite and ensure a change of government.

The DAP parliamentary leader had in a Chinese New Year message said that the Chinese community had managed to attain economic prosperity despite the failings of the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government, which has been mired in “corruption” and “abuses of power.”

“It is evident that Kit Siang cannot hide DAP’s true agenda in inciting the Chinese community ahead of the 13th general election. It shows the truth that DAP is not only the most racist party in Malaysia, it is the most racist party in the world,” said a Mingguan Malaysia editorial under the Awang Selamat pseudonym.

Lim’s remarks were in response to a statement made by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who had called on Chinese voters not to “experiment” in the next general election, as Barisan Nasional’s leadership has continually allowed the nation to prosper.

Lim said Malaysians needed to vote the opposition into power as Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) suffered from an “incorrigible disease of denial complex” in refusing to admit the failures of government and nation-building.

In response, Utusan accused Lim of bringing up the issue of concentration of wealth among the Chinese, and that it was being used as a “political model” to win over votes.

“Kit Siang’s actions in bringing up the issue of wealth among races is dangerous. Everyone knows that the economy is controlled by the Chinese because of what the colonists had done in placing the race in cities, the business culture had been inherited a long time ago.”

The editorial went on to accuse Lim of pushing for “only the rights of the Chinese” and not for other races, and also took pot shots at the opposition party’s latest attempt to recruit more Malay members.

“What he (Lim) will not be able to do is repair DAP’s racist image which is becoming worse. The addition of Malays in the party will not change anything.”

Sosilawati murders: Prosecution’s application to declare witness hostile rejected

Sosilawati murders: Prosecution’s application to declare witness hostile rejected
January 25, 2012

SHAH ALAM, Jan 25 — The High Court here today rejected an application by the prosecution in the murder trial of cosmetic millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others to declare a witness hostile, Bernama Online reported this evening.

The news portal said Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir made the decision after finding that the prosecution had no basis to support the application to declare R. Vakason as such.

In his judgment, Akhtar said he agreed with lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon, representing N. Pathmanabhan, the first accused in the murder case, that the prosecution should have a basis to support the application.

Akhtar also said he did not see any action by the witness against Deputy Public Prosecutor Ishak Mohd Yusoff that could be regarded as hostile.

Ishak submitted the application under Section 154 of the Evidence Act on the grounds that Vakason’s testimony did not side with the prosecution.

He also said that the prosecution had the right to challenge Vakason’s credibility.

During an earlier part of the trial, Ishak told the court that the prosecution would call Vakason to give an eyewitness account, stating that he saw Sosilawati with three men in a black BMW car at about 6.40pm on August 30, 2010.

Vakason, however, told the court that he saw nothing suspicious at a farm in Banting on the date in question, the day the murders were allegedly committed.

Vakason said he recalls hearing a car pull up before falling asleep at about 6pm on August 30, 2010. He testified that he only woke up the following day and went about his daily duties, while second accused, T. Thilaiyalagan, and third accused, R. Matan, fed the goats.

Pathmanabhan, 43, a former lawyer, and Thilaiyalagan, 21, Matan, 22, and R Khatavarayan, 32, who were workers at the farm, are charged with killing Sosilawati, 47, bank officer Noorhisham Mohamad, 38, lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, and Sosilawati's driver, Kamaruddin Shamsuddin, 44.

They are charged with committing the offence at Lot 2001, Jalan Tanjong Layang, Tanjung Sepat, Banting, between 8.30pm and 9.45pm on August 30, 2010.

The offence, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The hearing continues tomorrow.
