Cyber crime a ticking bomb in Malaysia

CYBERJAYA: Cyber crime is considered a ticking bomb as the Malaysian police recorded RM1 billion in losses from victims of such crime from January to July this year.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said Malaysia was ranked sixth globally in terms of cyber crime threat risks by US-based IT security developer, Sophos, in its three-month Security Threat report this year.
“It (cyber crime) is serious and we must educate the public in preventing it,” he told a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Royal Malaysian Police and Limkokwing University, here, yesterday.
The MoU was signed by Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department director, Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan, and Limkokwing University of Creative Technology senior vice-president, Datuk Raja Aznil Raja Hashim.
It provides the university with a five-year contract to provide contents such as posters, video clips and animations to the police in cyber crime-prevention campaigns.
Mohd Bakri said out of the RM1 billion in losses from cyber crime in the first six months of this year, 9,857 cases were reported with 7,801 of these solved and 3,385 people detained.
He said last year, the losses amounted to RM1.115 billion with 8,920 of the 11,543 reported cases solved and 3,712 people arrested.
Meanwhile, Syed Ismail said most of the cyber crime committed in the country were through parcel scams, selling goods via the Internet, and masquerading.
“Cyber crime in the country has yet to reach a level, where a syndicate would steal an information or intellectual property from a person or organisation and sell it to other parties or a rival for a price,” he said.
Therefore, Raja Aznil said the collaboration with the police in the campaign was vital to educate the public on the prevention measures so that they would not easily fall prey to cyber crime.
“This campaign mainly targets the young generation as they are tech-savy in using computers and mobile devices. They are also prone to be influenced by what is posted on the Internet, making them easy prey,” he said. — Bernama

Stadium Collapse: Architect Doubts Capability Of Workers

PUTRAJAYA: Architect Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad, who designed the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Terengganu, once again questioned the state government after another section of the roof fell through yesterday morning. 

Alluding to the contractors involved in the current project, he asked whether they are qualified enough since the incident happened while the stadium is currently undergoing re-construction work.

According to Bernama report, five workers were injured, three seriously, when steel structures supporting the roof of the stadium collapsed at 11.30am yesterday.

Raja Kamarul Bahrin wanted to know why it took so long to dismantle the remaining roof, as it would only be a matter time before history repeated itself.

"Were they qualified to dismantle the roof?" he asked when contacted by fz.com.

He stressed that dismantling of the remaining frame should have been carried out by the original Korean contractors who were responsible for the design, supply and the installation of the roof.

He added that the state government cannot blame anyone for today's incident as he had been warning them of such possibilities since the first incident four years ago.

On June 2, 2009, part of the roof collapsed at the stadium's grandstand a year after it opened for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2008, but no one was hurt then while repair works started at the end of last year.

On today's incident, Terengganu deputy police chief Datuk Hamzah Mohd Jamil said workers were dismantling the old roof structure when the incident happened.

"About 137m or two thirds of the old structure collapsed when eight workers were carrying out work at the site," he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama also reported that one of the victims, Safian Abdul Manaf, 21, said the incident happened so fast that he could not do anything.

Safian said he was trying to shift a steel frame that was 137 meters long and 25 meters high when he saw the frame fall and pin him down.

He broke his right leg, injured his mouth and lost his teeth.

"It happened about an hour after I started work. I managed to see the frame falling but I couldn't do anything. It happened so fast. 

"When I fell, my face knocked against a wall (terrace) and I passed out. When I regained conscious I was in an ambulance," he said when met at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah
Hospital.

Apart from Safian, Mohd Nazirul Nizam Marzuki, 25, (right knee injury) and Mohd Saidi Ismail, 21, (back injury) were also admitted while Mohd Syukri Jusuh, 31, and Wan Mohd Fajrulazmi Wan Ahmad, 26, suffered minor injuries.

Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Rahim Mohd Radzi said they formed 27% of the 36,728 prisoners nationwide. “This figure is not alarming but I must admit that there are more foreign prisoners than locals in Sabah. “Of the total 1,300 prisoners in Sabah, 1,020 are foreigners,” he told reporters after closing the 1KDN Family Carnival at the Kajang Prison Complex yesterday. Rahim said that to alleviate overcrowding in prisons, prisoners would be relocated to other prisons to ensure that their numbers were balanced. “As for foreign prisoners, we don’t want the issue of overcrowding in prisons to burden the country and ministry,” he said. Special police team to probe dumping of pig heads at mosque

JOHOR BARU: A special team has been set up by Johor police to investigate the dumping of several severed pig heads in plastic bags near the Al-Falah Mosque in Taman Desa Jaya here.

State police chief Datuk Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the pig heads were found by the mosque's congregation early Friday when they turned up for the dawn prayers.

"The team, which is headed by Johor deputy police chief Datuk Ismail Yatim, will seek the culprits until they are found," he said.

Mokhtar, who visited the scene of the incident, urged all parties to be patient, refrain from speculating about the incident and not to take the law into their own hands.

The mosque's committee chairman, Kassim Darim, 62, said residents in the area initially found a plastic bag believed to contain pig parts near the rear fence of the mosque at 5pm Thursday.

He said it was the first time such an incident had occurred in the area.

A police report was lodged at the Desa Cemerlang Police Station, he said.

Meanwhile, about 100 people, including from non-government organisations, held a peaceful gathering in front of the mosque to protest against the act. BERNAMA
